How to Reset a Forgotten MAC Admin Password?

You can change your Mac account password that you used to enter for logging into your Mac account. You can also reset the password in case you are not able to recall it. The user account password for your Mac operating system is also known by the name of login password. You have to enter this password, whenever you decide to make changes on your system such as installation of a new software.

Change the Password:

If you remember your password that you used to enter for logging into your account. You can go to users and group preferences for changing your password.

Step 1: First of all to reset a forgotten mac admin password, go to the Apple menu and then select system preferences. After that, click on Users and Groups.

Step 2: Go to the list of users and select your username.

Step 3: Click on the button of change password and then follow the instructions on the screen.

Reset Your Password:

If you are not able to recall your password or the one that you are entering is not letting you login, then you can follow any of the given reset methods for solving your problem but before that there are certain steps that you have to follow.

  • Please ensure that you are entering the right lower case or upper case characters. In case you have turned on caps lock on your system, then the password field will display that your caps lock is turned on.
  • In case question mark is appearing in the password field, then click on it and it will show you the hint that will help you in remembering your password.
  • Try logging in without entering the password. In case, that works out for you, then you will be able to add a password just by following the easy steps for changing the password.
  • You can also try logging in by entering Apple ID password, which you use for logging into iCloud. If the password has been changed or you entered the password but it is not working for you, then you can try entering the new password.

Use Your Apple ID for Resetting the Password:

In some of the versions of your Mac operating system, You can enter your Apple ID for resetting the login password. When the login screen is displayed, enter the password unless you see a message appearing on the screen which will ask you to reset the password by using your Apple ID. In case such a message does not appear even after 3 attempts, then that means your account does not allow you to reset the password using Apple ID.

Step 1: Click on the Apple icon right next to the message of Apple ID and then make a new password. Then, you will be asked for restarting after you are done.

Step 2: Enter your new password and then login.

Step 3: Now to reset a forgotten mac admin password, you have to decide whether you want to create a new login keychain.

Use Another Admin Account to Reset Your Password:

If you remember the name and password of your admin account on your Mac computer system, then that can be used for resetting the password.

Step 1: To reset a forgotten mac admin password, login using the name and password of your admin account.

Step 2: Go to the Apple menu and select system preferences and then go to Users and Groups.

Step 3: Click on lock, after that enter the password and admin name again.

Step 4: Take a look at the list of users and then choose your username.

Step 5: Click on the button of reset password. Then, you need to follow the instructions on the screen for creating a new password.

Step 5: Click on logout on your Apple menu.

Step 6: Enter the new password for logging into the account.

Step 7: Decide whether you want to create a new login keychain.

Use Reset Password Assistant for Resetting Password:

In case you have turned on FileVault. Then you may be able to reset the password by making use of reset password assistant.

Step 1: Wait for a minute on your login screen until you see a message appearing on your Mac stating. That you must use the power button to shut down your system and restart it in the recovery mode.

Step 2:  Press the button of power and hold it for some time in order to turn off your Mac.

Step 3: Once again you need to power on your Mac .

Step 4: When the window to reset the password appears in front of you. Carefully follow the instructions appearing on the screen for creating a new password.

Step 5: Once you are done, then you can click on restart.

Step 6: In case you were able to reset the password by using the reset password assistant. Then you will be able to log into your Mac by typing in the new password.

Step 7: Decide whether you can create a login keychain.

Use Recovery Key for Resetting the Password:

You can use the recovery key of file vaunt in order to reset your password.

Step 1: Once the login screen opens up, keep on typing in the password. Until a message pops up in front of you stating that you can reset the password by making use of the recovery key. In case the message does not appear after 3 consecutive attempts, then that means the FileVault is not turned on.

Step 2: Click on the message of next. Then, the recovery key field will be displayed on the screen.

Step 3: Enter that recovery key in the field. You can use hyphens and uppercase letters.

Step 4: Carefully follow the instructions appearing on the screen for creating a new password. After that, when you are done click on reset password.

Step 5: Decide whether you want to create a new login keychain.

If you are still not able to login after restarting your Apple computer, then you can perform these additional steps:

Step 1: Reboot your system once again. And hold the command R or any other recovery key combinations on Mac operating system. Keep on pressing those keys unless you see a spinning globe or Apple logo.

Step 2: After that to reset a forgotten mac admin password, the Mac operating system utility window will open up. Select Utility and then go to the terminal that is given in the menu bar.  

Step 3: Once you are on the terminal window, enter reset password. After that, click on return for opening the reset password assistant.
Step 4: After that to reset a forgotten mac admin password. Select the option of “My password does not work when logging in”. Then, click on Next and follow the instructions on the screen.
