How to Repair a Disk with Disk Utility on Mac OS X?

Repair a disk process mainly depends on the Mac OS X version that you are running. If your Mac OS X’s version is newer than EI Capitan that is launched in September 2015 then you should follow the below – mentioned steps –

  1. Firstly open Disk Utility by going through Applications> Utilities.
  2. Now you need to select the volume that you want to run First Aid on. No matter if it is an external hard drive or Mac’s hard drive.
  3. Next, tap on First Aid and then on Run. By doing this, verification and repair process will restart.
  4. When Disk Utility has completed its operations, you will see a drop-down sheet that will show your current status. If you need more information and tap on Triangle icon and access the details.
  5. If no errors were detected when Disk Utility performs its operations then you will see green checkmarks on the top of the drop-down sheet.
  6. On the other hand, if errors were detected then Disk Utility will repair them.

If due to any reason Disk Utility is unable to repair the drive then you will see a warning message on the screen. If such circumstances arise then you should back your Mac OS X ’s data before situation ran out of your hands.

Use Time Machine to Back Up Your Mac –

You should backup your Mac at frequent time intervals. Time Machine can help you get back to your business whenever you experience complex annoyances with your current hard-drive or upgrading to a new Mac OS X.

Enable Time Machine –

To enable Time Machine backup on Mac, go through these points –

  1.  Navigate to Apple menu and choose System Preferences.
  2.  After this, select the Time Machine icon and then tap on option “Select Backup Disk”.
  3.  Choose that disk that you want to use as a Time Machine backup.
  4.  In order to automatically backup your Mac to your select drive, you need to press a click on the checkbox that is next to “Backup Automatically”.

Manually restore Files from Time Machine –

  1. To restore File from Time Machine backup, choose System Preferences from Apple menu.
  2.  Then choose Time Machine icon and press a click on the checkbox that is next to “Show Time Machine in menu bar”.
  3. After clicking on Time Machine icon, tap on “Enter Time Machine”. Then search the file in question and tap on Restore.

At this moment, Time Machine will copy the file on your chosen disk from its original location.

Restore Hard Drive From Time Machine Backup –

  1. .Firstly power up your Mac and then press Command and R keys simultaneously to open Mac OS Recovery Partition. Now you will see Mac OS Utility screen.
  2. Just choose the option “Restore from Time Machine backup” and then tap on Continue.
  3.  Read the information carefully that is described on “Restore Your System” page. Next, tap on Continue button.
  4. Go ahead and choose your Time Machine backup. Tap on Continue. Choose the recent backup of your hard drive and then click on Continue button.

Now you Mac will restore Time Machine backup. When the process gets complete, your Mac will restart.
